supporting isolated communities
Island Aid (IAO) was founded immediately following the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. Upon realizing the extent of the disaster, and with the support of the British Embassy and other donors, IAO chartered an 800 ton ship and loaded it with aid in Jakarta and Padang. IAO were first NGO to reach Patek & Pulau Raya on the remote west coast of Aceh. Traumatized & isolated communities were still hiding on hill tops.
In this important first mission, IAO hosted over 240 volunteers and staff from various NGOs and delivered over 650 tons of medical and material resources supporting vulnerable communities in Aceh and Nias. Using our innovative sea based approach of delivery, IAO were able to reach beneficiaries that were inaccessible to organizations using conventional methods. Since 2005 IAO has been operating in Aceh, Nias Mentawai and West Sumatra focusing on disaster response and general development initiatives exclusively in remote communities which receive little or no help from other organizations or agencies.
