The World Bank commissioned a study to establish the number of people who will be impacted by a sea level rise of 5m. They were thinking about sea levels slowly rising and gradually displacing coastal populations. A 5 m tsunami will impact the same population but in minutes. The authors* estimated that over 17 million or 8% of Indonesia’s total population would be displaced.

8% of West Sumatras’s population is 240,000 people. Some can reach high ground to escape a tsunami but
many have nowhere to run. Island Aid has developed a new approach to the problem and our team is currently working on prototype development. The Tsunami Survival Pod is a collaborative project.
